Microsoft and Obsidian are reportedly pleased with Avowed's sales performance. In a February 22, 2025 Bloomberg interview, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the possibility of expansions or a sequel. While Obsidian hasn't officially announced any plans, Patel expressed strong interest in continuing the franchise, stating, "Having built this fantastic world, and with the team's strengthened expertise and familiarity with its content and gameplay, I'd love to explore it further."

Navigating Avowed's Development Challenges

Avowed's development journey was fraught with challenges and changes. Patel described the process as "messy," but ultimately successful. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's potential sale, faced hurdles even after its acquisition by Microsoft in 2020. The team had to cut features, including multiplayer functionality. A leadership change and game reboot in January 2021 further reshaped the project.

Patel highlighted the complexities of managing a large team (over 80 people), noting the challenges of revising creative direction and production plans on such a scale. Under her leadership, the team focused on strengthening the narrative and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, shifting from an open world to open zones for enhanced development. Patel's reflection on the process: "On every project I've worked on, it's always messy at first, then it all comes together."

Pillars of Eternity Tactics in the Works?

With Avowed reviving the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is exploring a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer confirmed the studio's interest, citing significant developer enthusiasm for the concept. However, he acknowledged the challenges of determining the project's scope, including team size, visual fidelity, and overall scale. While previous reports indicated developer interest in a tactics game, Avowed's success makes this a more realistic possibility.

Sawyer remains committed to Pillars of Eternity 3, but envisions a Baldur's Gate 3-level budget ($100 million), significantly larger than Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire's budget.
