Borderlands Franchise Expands With Anticipated Sequel

Gearbox CEO Hints at Borderlands 4 Following Disastrous Movie Debut

Following the box office bomb that was the Borderlands movie, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has again teased the development of Borderlands 4. His recent comments, expressing gratitude to fans for their continued enthusiasm for the game franchise (in contrast to the movie's reception), subtly confirmed the project's ongoing progress. He alluded to the team's hard work on the next installment, leaving fans anticipating further announcements.

This isn't the first time Pitchford has hinted at the game's development. A previous GamesRadar+ interview last month saw him mention several major projects in the works, suggesting an imminent reveal concerning the next Borderlands title. Officially, 2K confirmed Borderlands 4 earlier this year, coinciding with Take-Two Interactive's acquisition of Gearbox Entertainment. The series, boasting over 83 million units sold, has a proven track record, with Borderlands 3 becoming 2K's fastest-selling title (19 million copies) and Borderlands 2 remaining their best-selling game (over 28 million copies).

The underwhelming performance of the Borderlands film, however, provides significant context to Pitchford's comments. The movie's critical and commercial failure—a mere $4 million opening weekend against a $115 million budget—has fueled speculation about the studio's renewed focus on the core gaming franchise. The film received scathing reviews, failing to capture the charm and humor that defined the games. Critics, like Edgar Ortega of Loud and Clear Reviews, suggested the film misjudged its target audience, leading to a disappointing result.

Despite the movie's setback, Gearbox remains committed to delivering another successful Borderlands game. The poor reception serves as a stark reminder of the challenges inherent in adapting beloved video games to the big screen, but also underscores the continued dedication to the core fanbase that fuels the franchise's success.
