Fallout 3 Remaster to Improve Gunplay, Ex-Dev Says

Author: Harper Nov 06,2025

With the positive reception for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, many are now wondering which classic Bethesda title will receive the remaster treatment next. Speculation is growing around a potential Fallout 3 remaster, especially after a 2023 leak hinted at its development. So, how could Bethesda upgrade this beloved 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG?

Bruce Nesmith, a lead designer on Fallout 3, has highlighted the game's underwhelming gunplay as a key area for improvement. He anticipates a remaster would significantly overhaul the shooting mechanics.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that a Fallout 3 Remaster would likely feature combat refined to match the standards of Fallout 4.

"Just look at the advancements made in Fallout 4. That tells you what the team identified as necessary improvements over Fallout 3," Nesmith commented.

"A tremendous amount of effort went into refining the gunplay for Fallout 4 because Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first attempt at a shooter-heavy RPG. The results, in my opinion, were incredible."

The Oblivion Remaster, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, showcases a comprehensive suite of enhancements. Beyond the expected 4K/60fps performance, it features meaningful upgrades to the leveling system, character creation, combat animations, and user interface. New dialogue, an improved third-person camera, and advanced lip-sync technology are also included. These substantial changes have led some fans to argue it borders on being a full remake, though Bethesda has clarified its reasoning for labeling it a remaster.

Nesmith expects a Fallout 3 Remaster would follow a similar path of comprehensive improvements seen in the Oblivion project.

"The combat in Fallout 3 didn't really compete with dedicated shooters of that era," he noted. "It's an RPG first, not a run-and-gun experience. But the work done for Fallout 4 was extensive. I'd expect to see those refinements incorporated, assuming a similar approach is taken."

"The Oblivion remaster wasn't just upgraded to match Skyrim's 2011 level; it was elevated to something that, visually, appears to surpass even the latest Skyrim updates." Nesmith has even described the result as "Oblivion 2.0."

It's an exciting period for Bethesda, with development underway on The Elder Scrolls VI and potential new Starfield content. Combined with ongoing support for Fallout 76, new remasters, and the upcoming second season of the Fallout TV show heading to New Vegas, fans have much to look forward to.
