The rankings were determined by The Council, comprising over 70 experts including renowned developers, content creators, and PC Gamer's own editors. Other notable entries included Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, The Thing: Remastered, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Interestingly, Hollow Knight: Silksong was absent from the list and did not feature in the event's trailers.

Civilization VII is set to launch simultaneously across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on February 11, 2025, promising a wide-reaching appeal.

Civ 7 Game Mechanic Helps Players Finish Campaign

In a PC Gamer interview on December 6, Civ 7's Creative Director, Ed Beach, unveiled a new game mechanic designed to enhance player engagement and completion rates. Addressing the issue that many players of Civilization VI did not finish their campaigns, Beach introduced the "Ages" system for Civ 7.

"We had data showing that players often didn't reach the end of their Civilization games. We aimed to tackle this by reducing micromanagement and restructuring the game," Beach stated.

The "Ages" feature divides a single playthrough into three chapters: the Antiquity Age, the Exploration Age, and the Modern Age. At the end of each Age, players have the option to switch to a new civilization, mirroring the historical rise and fall of empires. However, this transition isn't arbitrary; the new civilization must have a historical or geographical link to the previous one. For instance, transitioning from the Roman Empire to the French Empire might involve a bridge civilization like the Norman Empire.

Leaders remain consistent across all Ages, providing continuity and a personal connection to the player's journey. Additionally, the "overbuild" feature allows players to construct new buildings on top of existing ones as they progress through different Ages, although certain structures like Wonders remain constant throughout the campaign.

This innovative approach enables players to experience the evolution of various civilizations within a single playthrough, offering fresh perspectives on cultural, military, diplomatic, and economic strategies while maintaining a connection to their chosen leader.
