Civilization 7's Steam version currently holds a "mostly negative" rating, with players expressing dissatisfaction over the advanced access release. Here's what's sparking the controversy.
Civ 7 Receives "Mostly Negative" Steam Rating During Early Access
Players Critique User Interface, Map Systems and Resource Mechanics
Civilization 7 (commonly called Civ 7) launched its Advanced Access version five days ahead of its February 11 release date, but many Steam players are dissatisfied with the current build. The premium early access version has resulted in overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam.
Hype for Civ 7 was substantial, marking the first new installment since Civ 6 debuted in 2016. However, the excitement has been tempered by the game's current "Mostly Negative" Steam rating, with consistent criticisms emerging across reviews.
The game's user interface (UI) features prominently among player complaints. Numerous reviews describe the UI as "clunky" and "unpolished" compared to Civ 6, with one player likening it to "a cheap mobile Civilization imitation." Some critics suggest Firaxis Games prioritized console development, resulting in a "stripped-down" PC interface with limited customization.
Map systems also draw significant criticism, with players citing problems with selection interfaces, limited map type previews, and reduced customization. According to one review, the current system lacks descriptive information when browsing map options, unlike previous titles in the series.
Civ 7's map size options have been reduced to just three presets - Small, Medium, and Large - compared to Civ 6's five scalable sizes that supported varied playstyles.
The revised resource mechanics represent another controversial change. Resources now function through city/empire management systems rather than appearing as map-based collectibles. This departure from Civ 6's randomized tile-based resource distribution has drawn criticism from players who valued the previous system's replayability. Many argue the new approach reduces strategic depth and variation between playthroughs.
Firaxis Games has responded to player feedback: "We're actively monitoring UI feedback and committed to improving Civilization VII through ongoing updates. Regarding maps, expect continued evolution through future expansions. We value your input!"
