Split Fiction: More Surprises Unfold
Laser Hell Conquered: A Trip to Sweden Awaits
Split Fiction's successful launch last month continues to generate excitement, with the discovery of the hidden "Laser Hell" stage adding another layer of challenge and reward. This incredibly difficult stage proved too much for most, but Chinese streamers sharkOvO and E1uM4y rose to the occasion. Their impressive accomplishment, documented on BiliBili, earned them a unique prize: a trip to Hazelight Studios in Sweden, courtesy of director Josef Fares himself.
The duo unlocked the Laser Hell challenge by correctly inputting a specific switch sequence on the Isolation level elevator. This led them to a laser-infested platform stage, a true test of skill and precision. Their victory unlocked a congratulatory video from Fares, who admitted even many Hazelight developers struggled to complete the level. Fares subsequently confirmed the invitation on Twitter (X) on March 19th, stating, "Congrats to "sharkOvO" and "E1uM4y" for finishing the secret challenge "Laser Hell" in #splitficton. VERY impressive! I will keep my promise and invite you both to Sweden for an early look of our next game. We´ll be in touch!"
Hazelight Studios: The Next Chapter Begins
In a recent interview on The Friends Per Second podcast (March 17th), Fares discussed Hazelight's strong relationship with EA and revealed that development on their next game is underway. He described Split Fiction's reception as exceptionally positive, stating, "This has been a bit extra special. I would say that it’s been the best-received game we have done, but to be honest, everybody is super happy, but I’m so fully-focused and excited on the next thing that we already have started."
While he confirmed active development, Fares remained tight-lipped about specifics, explaining, "There is a reason why I can’t talk about the next game; it’s because it’s quite early...just know this: we are very, very, very, very excited here. Very excited, and we started working on this a month ago-ish." He also highlighted Hazelight's independent creative process with EA, emphasizing that EA acts as a supportive publisher rather than dictating development.
Fares clarified Hazelight's relationship with EA, stating, "Here’s the thing, people don’t understand this: EA is a supporter. We don’t pitch games to them. We say, ‘We’re going to do this.’ That’s it. They have zero, and I mean zero, thing to say about what we’re doing next." He praised EA's respectful approach, contrasting it with experiences reported by other developers, and highlighted Hazelight's success as a key factor in this collaborative relationship.
Split Fiction Update and Sales Milestone
On March 17th, Split Fiction received its first update, addressing community-reported issues such as glitches, localization problems, and minor gameplay bugs. This update further solidifies the game's positive reception.
Furthermore, Split Fiction achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing 2 million copies sold within its first week of release. This impressive figure significantly outpaces the initial sales of Hazelight's previous hit, It Takes Two, which reached 1 million sales a few weeks after launch.
Split Fiction is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates!
