Back in early April, fans of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 noticed mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) on informational pages about the system, which were quickly removed. Now, Nintendo has provided clarity on the VRR functionality of the Nintendo Switch 2.
In a statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was incorrect: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When asked about future support for VRR in docked mode, Nintendo indicated that they have "nothing to announce on this topic" at this time.
This means that while the Nintendo Switch 2 will offer VRR as an option when used in handheld mode, users playing on a TV will not have access to this feature at launch. The clarification follows a period of confusion after the initial mention of VRR was noticed and then promptly removed from various sites, a process documented by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.
Although this news may disappoint those who were hoping for VRR support in TV mode from the start, there's still hope for future updates. For instance, Sony rolled out VRR support for the PS5 via a post-launch firmware update, suggesting that Nintendo could potentially follow suit.
In other Nintendo Switch 2 news, Nintendo has announced a list of games that will receive free performance upgrades on the new console, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has assured that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet consumer demand throughout the holiday season.
