Kojima to Direct Film Post-Physint Completion

Hideo Kojima's spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Physint, remains approximately five to six years away from launch.

This update comes directly from Kojima, who revealed during an interview with Le Film Francais that his filmmaking ambitions would remain postponed until completing his first "action espionage" title since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.

"Since becoming independent, I've received numerous compelling offers to develop games at my studio," Kojima explained, via translation by ResetEra user Red Kong XIX. "Alongside Death Stranding 2, we're currently developing Physint. This project will require another five to six years.

"Perhaps afterward, I might finally pursue film direction," the visionary creator added. "Cinema shaped my childhood. Directing would essentially pay homage to that passion. Moreover, time marches forward – I'd prefer undertaking this while maintaining creative vitality!"

PlayPlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst initially unveiled Physint in January 2024, though details have remained scarce since. Notably, Kojima initially suggested cinematic integration before clarifying on X/Twitter that the project represents "next-generation 'Digital Entertainment'" blending cutting-edge visuals, narrative, cast performances, aesthetics and audio.

The project joins Kojima Productions' busy development slate including Death Stranding 2 and OD – a Microsoft collaboration featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Kojima also contributes to A24's Death Stranding film adaptation.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach launches June 26, with franchise lead Norman Reedus confirming to IGN he'd "naturally" reprise his role in the cinematic adaptation. This follows Kojima's recent revelations about shelved concepts including a novel "Forgetting Game" mechanic where passive play erodes character knowledge.

Most strikingly, Kojima recently disclosed leaving his team a legacy USB drive containing unreleased game concepts – ensuring his creative vision endures beyond his lifetime.
