Assassin’s Creed Shadows will offer 30-40 hours of core narrative gameplay. During the Kyoto showcase event, Creative Director Johnathan Dumont shared key details about the game's scope with Genki Gamer.

Dumont confirmed the main campaign spans 30-40 hours, complemented by over 80 hours of side content. The team is evaluating fan-requested features like New Game+ – a feature notably absent in AC Valhalla that left many players disappointed. Future updates may introduce additional gameplay modes based on community feedback.

The director highlighted several innovations including dynamic seasonal weather systems, enhanced gameplay mechanics, and an expanded customizable Hideout. Shadows will also progress the overarching Animus narrative, setting up future franchise developments.

Bringing a Japanese Fantasy to Life

Dumont described the Japan setting as a longtime dream for the development team. "Creating movement through natural environments was crucial for this setting," he explained, noting that current technology finally allowed them to realize their vision with an authentic story.

While drawing inspiration from iconic Japanese cinema like Kurosawa films and 13 Assassins, the team has incorporated classic Assassin's Creed elements. Dumont addressed ongoing controversies, particularly regarding the inclusion of historical figure Yasuke, acknowledging their efforts to thoughtfully handle cultural representation.

"Our focus remains on delivering an exceptional gaming experience," Dumont stated, emphasizing the team's commitment to honoring Japanese culture through meticulous attention to detail.

Ubisoft recently detailed the Hideout mechanics on their official channels. Located in Izumi Settsu's hidden valley, this player headquarters serves as the foundation for rebuilding the local Brotherhood.

Systems Associate Director Dany called the Hideout "our most ambitious base yet," explaining: "After designing everything from pirate coves to moving trains, we knew we needed something revolutionary. Players will have complete creative freedom in constructing their personal stronghold."

Each player receives an acre of land to shape with structures, gardens, and decorations that progressively unlock throughout the story. "Your Hideout evolves with your journey, becoming a true reflection of your playstyle," Dany noted.

Creating Your Brotherhood

The Hideout hosts various allies who bring specialized skills and narratives. Character placement affects their behavior – warriors train in the Dojo while more contemplative allies might relax in the Zashiki sake house.

This living space generates organic interactions between characters. "We gathered writers from our global studios to craft unique dialogue scenarios," Dany revealed. "These dynamic relationships transform the Hideout from a simple base into the emotional core of your Brotherhood."

With its blend of authentic Japanese setting and signature Assassin's Creed gameplay innovations, Shadows promises to deliver a fresh yet familiar experience for franchise fans.

Assassin's Creed Shadows launches March 20, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates as the release date approaches.
