EA Mandates Full Office Return, Phasing Out Remote Work Policies

Electronic Arts has informed employees it will permanently end remote work arrangements, requiring a full return to office operations.

A Shift Back to Physical Workspaces

In an internal communication obtained by IGN, CEO Andrew Wilson stated that in-person collaboration generates "a dynamic energy that drives creativity, innovation, and teamwork – often leading to unexpected breakthroughs that enhance player experiences." The new hybrid policy establishes a minimum three-day office requirement while phasing out offsite local positions.

Implementation Timeline and Details

EA Entertainment president Laura Miele provided additional clarification in a follow-up message:

  • The transition won't occur immediately - employees should continue current work arrangements until notified
  • A minimum 12-week notice will precede any work model changes
  • Hybrid roles require at least three office days weekly within a 30-mile (48km) radius of EA locations
  • The Offsite Local designation will be gradually discontinued over 3-24 months
  • Future remote hiring and exceptions will require executive approval

Employee Concerns and Industry Trends

Anonymous EA employees expressed frustration to IGN regarding lengthy commutes, childcare challenges, and medical accommodations previously enabled by remote work. Those classified as remote outside the 30-mile radius worry about job security if relocation proves impossible.

The policy shift follows broader industry movements toward office returns from companies like Rockstar Games, Ubisoft, and Activision Blizzard. While remote work surged during COVID-19 restrictions, major publishers increasingly favor physical workspaces.

This announcement follows EA's recent workforce reductions, including approximately 300 company-wide layoffs, BioWare staff cuts earlier this year, and 670 positions eliminated last year.
