Since 2009, the Borderlands series has held a special place in my heart with its high-octane gunplay, outrageous arsenal of weapons, and signature crude humor. Though it pioneered the looter shooter genre, the franchise has seen newer RPG-infused multiplayer shooters gain prominence. With Borderlands 4, Gearbox appears determined to reclaim its crown through bold innovations - from refined shooting mechanics and revamped RPG systems to an all-new setting, fresh characters, and a more mature tone. My hands-on preview left me convinced I'll be diving back into this chaotic world of psychos and obnoxious robots.
Expanded Movement Options
The most noticeable upgrade in Borderlands 4 is the expanded movement system. Vault Hunters now have access to five new traversal methods: double jumps, aerial gliding, lateral dashes, grapple hooks, and - at long last - swimming capability. These additions transform combat arenas into playgrounds for creative engagements while solving the sluggish movement that plagued earlier entries. Though the wealth of options initially felt overwhelming, by session's end I was weaving between jumps, glides, and grapples with increasing fluidity while raining destruction on enemies.

Signature Weapon Mayhem
While weapon variety aligns with series expectations, new manufacturers Ripper and Daedelus introduce fresh mechanics like spin-up firing and multi-ammo systems. The Order stands out with alternate fire modes, such as a gravity well-generating pistol. Though my preview focused on early-game weapons, the potential for late-game legendary discoveries promises to maintain Borderlands' signature loot-driven excitement.
Deeper Customization Systems
The introduction of Repkits - equipable healing items with trade-off effects - adds strategic depth to character builds. Options range from simple health restoration to riskier choices like cryo explosions upon activation. This system creates meaningful decisions where players balance survival with offensive potential.
The new Vault Hunters showcase distinct playstyles: Vex commands summoned allies while Rafa utilizes high-tech gadgetry. Early skill trees already reveal impactful abilities, like converting Rafa's shoulder turrets into stationary defense systems. These previews suggest substantial build diversity for endgame experimentation.
A Fresh Narrative Direction
Borderlands 4 transitions to the cyberpunk-themed world of Kairos, ruled by the tyrannical Timekeeper. While maintaining the series' irreverent humor, the narrative demonstrates more mature themes and character development - particularly welcome after Borderlands 3's criticized villains. The new setting and predominantly original cast create a soft reboot feel while preserving the franchise's core identity.
Refined Core Gameplay
Essential Borderlands elements remain intact: frenetic combat, absurd weaponry, and satisfying loot explosions. Quality-of-life improvements like anywhere-vehicle-summoning address longstanding frustrations. The preview's mechanics-heavy boss battle suggests significant enemy design evolution while delivering that signature Borderlands challenge.
Borderlands 4 appears poised to reinvigorate the franchise through meaningful innovation without sacrificing its anarchic spirit. While retaining the chaotic fun that defined the series, Gearbox's willingness to take creative risks may finally propel Borderlands back to the forefront of the genre it helped create.
