Chrono Trigger-Inspired RPG "Threads of Time" Coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC
PS5 and Switch Versions Currently Unannounced
Threads of Time, a new 2.5D RPG drawing inspiration from legendary titles like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy, made its debut during Xbox's Tokyo Game Show 2024 presentation. Developed by indie team Riyo Games, this title is currently in development for Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam, though no concrete release date has been set. Notably absent from the announcement were PS5 and Nintendo Switch versions.
Despite being a fresh announcement, Threads of Time is already drawing comparisons to 2023's critically acclaimed Sea of Stars, positioning itself as a worthy successor to Square Enix's timeless Chrono series. This marks Riyo Games' first foray into turn-based, retro-style RPG development.
"Our mission at Riyo Games is to create retro-inspired RPGs that rekindle cherished childhood moments," the studio explained in their official statement. "This journey began with two childhood friends making a promise beside their CRT television - to one day create their own magical, story-driven adventures."

Showcasing beautiful 2.5D pixel art, Threads of Time follows an ensemble cast of distinctive characters from various historical periods as they journey across time itself. The story traverses multiple eras - "from the age of dinosaurs to futuristic robot civilizations" - as players gradually uncover a conspiracy threatening "the fundamental nature of time itself." Complementing its pixel aesthetic, the game features modern anime-style cutscenes that further develop its complex narrative.
The game introduces several memorable party members including: Rye, a enigmatic swordsman from 1000 AD; Bo, a talented animal healer from 12,000,000 BC; Rin, a fox-like warrior from 2400 AD wielding dual blades; and others. RPG enthusiasts can now add Threads of Time to their wishlists through the Xbox store and Steam.
