FromSoftware has recently unveiled additional details about their upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo has not only influenced the game's style but also introduced a unique twist to the design of the hub area's keeper, giving it a notably cute aesthetic.
During the Switch 2 Direct this week, the trailer concluded with a captivating shot of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, directly engaging the audience. This character, as it turns out, serves as the hub companion for The Duskbloods.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki, in an interview with Nintendo, explained the role of this intriguing character: "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance." He further elaborated on the design choice, stating, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership."
When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," Miyazaki added with a laugh, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers have traditionally been pivotal to the player's journey, with iconic figures like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll returning repeatedly to offer crucial assistance and power-ups. In the context of The Duskbloods, which features a PvPvE gameplay style, the specific guidance and advice provided by the winged rat companion will be a novel aspect to watch out for. Miyazaki hinted at the team's experimentation with "a lot of new and interesting ideas," promising an innovative experience when The Duskbloods launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
