The temporary US shutdown of TikTok on January 19th unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). This disruption, lasting approximately 24 hours, resulted in the game becoming temporarily inaccessible. While Marvel Snap is now back online, in-app purchases remain disabled, and full functionality is still being restored.
This incident, attributed to significant political risks surrounding TikTok's ongoing negotiations to sell a 50% stake to a US-based entity, prompted developers to consider a publisher change and internalizing some services. The 90-day extension granted to finalize this sale leaves Marvel Snap vulnerable to future disruptions should the agreement fail.
Second Dinner Studios, the game's developer, issued a statement on Platform X assuring players that "Marvel Snap is here to stay" and that they are diligently working to resolve the issue. They also acknowledged the lack of prior warning, a point of significant frustration for many players who continued making in-game purchases unaware of the impending outage. While PC players via Steam remained unaffected, many experienced authorization problems. Further updates are promised.
