HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, confirming only that they'll announce casting details upon finalizing deals, Variety reports Lithgow is nearing a deal. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as the frontrunner for the role.

"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "As pre-production continues, we will only confirm casting once agreements are finalized."

Lithgow's extensive filmography includes roles in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his versatility.

While casting remains largely confidential, reports suggest HBO is making significant progress. The search for the young leads—Harry, Ron, and Hermione—is ongoing, but Paapa Essiedu has reportedly been cast as Severus Snape.

The series will prioritize British talent, a decision possibly influenced by J.K. Rowling's "significant involvement" in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series promises a faithful adaptation of the books, aiming for a richer, more detailed narrative than the films allowed. The series will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (Succession), with Mylod also contributing writing experience from Game of Thrones.
