"The Fantastic Four: First Steps" is set to introduce several major characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but director Matt Shakman has confirmed that John Malkovich's portrayal of the Red Ghost will not be among them.

Insight into Malkovich's removal from the final cut of the new Fantastic Four film comes from a Variety interview with Shakman, conducted ahead of the movie's premiere later this month. He explained that scenes featuring Malkovich's villain were among the many that "ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor."

"While constructing a retro-futuristic world set in the '60s, introducing multiple antagonists, establishing the four main characters both as a team and individually, and incorporating the storyline of a child—there were numerous elements to balance in this film. Consequently, some material had to be trimmed to shape the final version," Shakman stated.

Malkovich's involvement as the Red Ghost had been enveloped in mystery for months, though the casting itself was no secret. While fans were uncertain about the extent of the Burn After Reading actor's screen time in "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," he was briefly seen with long white hair and an unkempt beard in the initial teaser trailer released in February. However, his absence from most subsequent promotional materials fueled rumors that Marvel had decided to remove Malkovich and the Red Ghost from the film entirely. These speculations have now been confirmed.

"It was heartbreaking to exclude him from the final cut, as he is one of my most admired individuals and a tremendous source of inspiration," Shakman expressed.

"It was heartbreaking to exclude him from the final cut, as he is one of my most admired individuals and a tremendous source of inspiration," Shakman added. "As someone who navigates between theater, film, and television, the founder of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company stands as an unparalleled figure. His accomplishments on stage as an actor and director, along with his remarkable work in film, are truly inspiring. I was deeply honored that he agreed to participate."

According to Shakman, audiences would have witnessed Malkovich in a sequence depicting the early adventures of Marvel's First Family. The scene featured a confrontation between the superhero team and the Red Ghost alongside his Super-Apes. Whether this unused footage will ever be released remains uncertain, but Shakman assured that Malkovich "delivered a brilliant performance and gave it his all."
