Top Switch Games from GBA & DS Era Hit Nintendo eShop

Author: Nora Feb 08,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts a robust Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've compiled ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – presented without ranking.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a personal preference, this GBA iteration offers a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison piece, it provides a more streamlined experience. A captivating title enjoyable even for non-shooter enthusiasts.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

While the Mega Man X console series faltered, the Mega Man legacy found a worthy successor on the GBA. Mega Man Zero initiates an exceptional side-scrolling action series, albeit with initial presentation imperfections. Subsequent entries refine these aspects, but the first game remains the ideal starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by the stark contrast between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept, set within electronic devices, is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, this remains highly entertaining.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

Another collection where playing all titles is recommended, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal. A top-tier third-party GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae achieved cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, broadened its appeal significantly. Its success solidified Shantae's presence across subsequent console generations. Interestingly, its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA title, soon to be released.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney blends investigations and courtroom drama. The humorous yet compelling narrative makes this first game a standout. While later installments are also excellent, this remains a strong contender for the best.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares its writing quality but offers unique gameplay. As a ghost, you utilize your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

Considered a top-tier Nintendo DS game, its tight integration with the DS hardware makes porting challenging. The Switch version serves as a viable alternative for those without access to a Nintendo DS. A remarkable game across all aspects.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow is highlighted due to improved button controls replacing the original touch controls. However, all three DS titles within the collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise challenging to adapt outside the DS/3DS ecosystem, Atlus's Switch port remains playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game stands alone, offering substantial RPG experiences. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a worthwhile, albeit complex, adventure.
