Shawn Levy, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of joining the Star Wars universe, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Levy's Star Wars film is in negotiations with Gosling to take a leading role. Levy has been developing this project since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's once again collaborating with Jonathan Tropper, the screenwriter behind This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy directed.
Plot details remain tightly under wraps, naturally. There's no information yet on Gosling's character or the film's place within the Star Wars timeline. What is known is that the story is entirely separate from the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates it's intended as a standalone film, ruling out a trilogy (at least for now).

Gosling's potential involvement has significantly accelerated the project's timeline. While Levy was previously attached to a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR reports that Gosling's confirmation would likely push Levy's Star Wars film to become his next project, with production slated to begin this fall.
The Star Wars franchise is currently navigating a period of transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the film side, Dave Filoni's The Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed production in December, targeting a May 22, 2026 release. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey from the sequel trilogy is also in the works.
A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending the project's progress. For a comprehensive look at upcoming Star Wars content, check out our preview of Star Wars in 2025.
