Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team Joins Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Launching August 9th

Nintendo's Expansion Pack for Nintendo Switch Online welcomes another classic Pokémon title to its growing library. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team arrives on August 9th, as officially announced by Nintendo. This beloved roguelike adventure joins the Expansion Pack's collection of Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis games.

Originally released globally in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team casts players as a human mysteriously transformed into a Pokémon. Players delve into dungeons, completing missions to uncover the secret behind their transformation. A companion title, Blue Rescue Team, launched simultaneously for the Nintendo DS. A remake, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, was released for the Switch in 2020.

Mainline Pokémon Games Still Desired by Fans

The Expansion Pack's regular additions of classic games have, however, left some fans wanting more. The inclusion of primarily Pokémon spin-offs like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League has prompted calls for mainline Pokémon titles. While there's been no official word on adding games like Pokémon Red and Blue, fans have offered several theories.

Speculation ranges from potential N64 Transfer Pak compatibility issues to challenges with the Nintendo Switch Online infrastructure and integration with the Pokémon Home app. The latter, not wholly owned by Nintendo, might present contractual hurdles. One fan theorized, "They likely want to ensure trading functionality and prevent exploitation."

Alongside the PMD Red Rescue Team announcement, Nintendo unveiled a resubscription bonus for Nintendo Switch Online. As part of the Mega Multiplayer Festival (running until September 8th), purchasing a 12-month membership from the eShop or My Nintendo Store nets two extra months free. August also offers additional perks, including bonus Gold Points on game purchases (August 5th-18th).

From August 19th to 25th, four free multiplayer Switch game trials will be available (titles to be announced). A Nintendo Mega Multiplayer game sale follows from August 26th to September 8th, 2024.
