This concludes my retrospective series on retro game eShop selections. The supply of retro consoles with diverse game libraries is dwindling, but I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's inaugural console exceeded all expectations, creating a legendary game library that continues to see re-releases. While these titles were initially a challenge to Nintendo, they're now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underappreciated title, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Players control a charming, floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a menacing threat. Its vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and surprisingly impactful narrative make it a standout. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both games are a must-have.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A landmark title, Final Fantasy VII introduced the JRPG genre to a broader Western audience, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and a key driver of the PlayStation's success. While the remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, despite its dated polygon graphics. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Although later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a standout, offering engaging gameplay reminiscent of classic action series. The PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch for those seeking more.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics show their age, the game's vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses create a compelling shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
While Chrono Cross faced the impossible task of following Chrono Trigger, it stands on its own as a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. Its soundtrack is also legendary.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While personal bias clouds my judgment on the Mega Man series, Mega Man X4 stands out for its superior structure compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to experience this standout entry and decide for yourself.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with solid action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it starts easy but presents a significant challenge.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Though originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port formed the basis for this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright and cheerful adventure with a satisfying combat system.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut is a classic. While the quality varied across the five games, the original's focus on tomb raiding remains a highlight. This collection allows players to experience the first three games and form their own opinions.
moon ($18.99)
A unique Japanese release, moon deconstructs the RPG genre. It's more of an adventure game with a punk aesthetic, offering an unconventional and thought-provoking experience.
