Switch 2 Joy-Cons Might Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer an unconventional feature: mouse functionality. While the widespread adoption of this mode by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
This intriguing possibility emerged from data shared by Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data linked to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended for "game console handles." The "mouse soles" designation, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly hints at potential mouse-like functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The listed size (90 x 90mm) suggests the tape could cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While innovative for Nintendo, mouse-like controller modes aren't entirely new. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transformable into a sideways joystick for mouse functionality. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to aid smooth surface movement.
The Legion GO also boasts magnetic controller rails—another feature rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity further fuels speculation about the Switch 2's design direction.
