Nintendo Reveals Switch 2 Game Cards May Only Offer Download Keys

Nintendo has announced a significant change with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch in June. The company revealed that the new Switch 2 game cards will sometimes contain a key for a game download rather than the actual game itself. This was detailed in a recent customer support post following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event.

As fans of physical media, you'll still be able to buy traditional Switch games, but it's important to be aware of the new game-key cards. These cards will only include a download key, requiring an internet connection to access the game once inserted into the console. Nintendo assures that these game-key card packages will be clearly labeled on the front of the box, helping you make informed purchases.

Concerns have arisen that these cards might eventually replace traditional game cartridges entirely. However, early indications suggest that this may not be the case. For instance, while some upcoming titles like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster will use game-key cards, others like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza will not.

It seems Nintendo plans to use game-key cards selectively, perhaps for larger games that could benefit from quicker distribution through downloads, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Notably, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will be released with a full 64 GB game card on the Switch 2's launch day.

During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo highlighted the enhanced capabilities of their new red game cards, boasting faster data reading speeds than those of the original Switch. This suggests that not all Switch 2 games will shift to the game-key card model, as Nintendo continues to innovate with physical media. Past examples like LA Noire and NBA 2K18 on the original Switch also required additional downloads, showing Nintendo's willingness to blend physical and digital distribution.

While the extent to which game-key cards will be used remains to be seen, the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025. For more details on the announcements from the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, click here. To explore the new technology featured in the Switch 2, you can click here.
