Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting a potential Minecraft 2 is in the works. His recent X (formerly Twitter) poll and subsequent comments strongly imply a spiritual successor to his groundbreaking creation is a real possibility.
A Poll Reveals a Strong Desire for a Minecraft Sequel
On January 1st, Notch posted a poll asking fans which of two game concepts he should prioritize: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid or a "spiritual successor to Minecraft." The latter option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This significant response clearly demonstrates the enduring popularity of Minecraft and the considerable demand for a new game in a similar vein.
In a follow-up post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had essentially announced Minecraft 2. He expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting his passion project and acknowledged the potential financial success of a new Minecraft-inspired game. However, he emphasized his respect for Mojang Studios and Microsoft, the current owners of the Minecraft IP, and his commitment to avoiding any copyright infringement. He aims to create a distinct experience while acknowledging the legacy of the original.
Notch also acknowledged the inherent risks in developing spiritual successors, noting that they often fail to meet expectations. Despite these concerns, he’s leaning towards the project that fans clearly desire.
While fans eagerly await Notch's next project, they can anticipate other Minecraft-related entertainment. A Minecraft-themed amusement park is slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," is set for release later in 2025.
