Microsoft is expanding its AI capabilities into the gaming world with the introduction of AI Copilot for Xbox, set to enhance the gaming experience by offering advice, tracking play history, and performing various tasks. The feature will be rolled out soon for testing among Xbox Insiders through the Xbox mobile app. Copilot, which replaced Cortana in 2023 and is already integrated into Windows, will bring a suite of features to Xbox gaming. Users will be able to command Copilot to install games, review play history, check achievements, browse their game library, and receive recommendations on what to play next. Additionally, players can interact with Copilot directly on the Xbox app during gameplay, receiving answers in the same efficient manner as they do on Windows.
A standout feature of Copilot for gaming is its role as a gaming assistant. Currently, on PC, users can ask Copilot for tips on beating bosses or solving puzzles, with the AI sourcing information from online guides, websites, wikis, and forums. This functionality will soon extend to the Xbox app. Microsoft aims to ensure that the information provided by Copilot is accurate and reflective of the game studios' vision, with direct references to the original sources of information.
Microsoft's vision for Copilot doesn't stop with the initial features. In future developments, Copilot could serve as a walkthrough assistant, helping with basic game functions, remembering item locations, and suggesting where to find new items. It could also offer real-time strategy suggestions in competitive games, providing tips to counter opponents and explain gameplay dynamics. While these are currently conceptual ideas, Microsoft is committed to integrating Copilot more deeply into the Xbox gaming experience, eventually collaborating with both first-party and third-party studios.
Regarding privacy and user control, Xbox Insiders will have the option to opt out of Copilot features during the preview phase on mobile. They can decide how and when to interact with Copilot, control access to their conversation history, and manage what actions Copilot performs on their behalf. Microsoft emphasizes transparency about data collection and usage, promising to keep players informed about their data choices. However, the possibility of Copilot becoming a mandatory feature in the future remains open.
Beyond player-focused applications, Microsoft is set to discuss Copilot's potential for developers at the upcoming Game Developers Conference, indicating a broader vision for AI integration in gaming.
