However, he has stepped into the spotlight with his solo adventures in the Luigi's Mansion series. Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019)
Luigi's first starring role on Switch came in Luigi’s Mansion 3, the third installment in his solo series. In this adventure, Luigi and his green gooey clone team up with Professor E. Gadd to battle ghosts and rescue his friends from King Boo’s haunted hotel.
Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD (2024)
Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is a remake of the 2013 Nintendo 3DS game Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. In this second entry in the spooky series, Luigi embarks on a ghostbusting journey through the mansions of Evershade Valley to capture King Boo and save his brother once more.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership (2024)
Although not solely focused on Luigi, Mario & Luigi: Brothership puts both brothers on equal footing. This game marks the first release in the Mario & Luigi series since Paper Jam in 2014. Players control both brothers as they navigate puzzles and platforming challenges to restore the kingdom of Concordia.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017)
Luigi first appeared as a playable character on the Switch in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. As a middleweight racer, Luigi has a balanced stat distribution with a slight emphasis on speed and handling. His appearance in an ad for the original Wii U version of Mario Kart 8 famously sparked the Luigi Death Stare meme.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (2017)
Luigi next graced the Switch in the Nintendo-Ubisoft collaboration Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. This tactical RPG includes both Luigi and Rabbid Luigi, a Rabbid who mimics Luigi's attire and behavior, as potential party members.
Mario Tennis Aces (2018)
Luigi took to the court as one of 16 playable launch characters in 2018’s Mario Tennis Aces. Known for his balanced attributes in Mario sports games, Luigi's specialty shot, the Pipe Cannon, propels him into the air for a powerful spike.
Super Mario Party (2018)
Luigi is one of 20 playable characters in Super Mario Party. As Mario's younger brother, he has been a mainstay in every Mario Party game, including the subsequent titles listed here. This was the first Mario Party game for the Switch and ranks as Nintendo’s ninth best-selling game on the platform, according to the company.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018)
Luigi is an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As one of the 12 characters playable in all five Smash games, Luigi is ranked as an A+-tier fighter and the 18th best overall, according to LumiRank’s 2025 tier list, which compiled the opinions of 93 ranked Smash players.
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (2019)
Luigi is a playable character in the 2019 platformer New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. This enhanced version of NSMBU for Wii U includes the expansion New Super Luigi U, where Luigi takes the spotlight with his higher jump, remixed levels, and a challenging 100-second timer per level.
Super Mario Maker 2 (2019)
In Super Mario Maker 2, Luigi joins Mario, Toad, and Toadette as one of four playable characters. This level-building platformer empowers players to design their own Mario levels using assets from various classic Mario games.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (2021)
Like its Wii U predecessor, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury allows players to control Luigi throughout the entire game. Luigi's controls are similar to Mario's, with a slightly higher jump and less traction, giving him a more 'floaty' and 'slippery' feel.
Mario Golf: Super Rush (2021)
Luigi tees off with Mario and friends in Mario Golf: Super Rush. As one of 22 playable characters, he offers good control and excellent speed, making him an ideal choice for the game's new Speed Golf mode. His special shot, the Ice Flower Freeze, creates a frozen hazard on the course upon impact.
Mario Party Superstars (2021)
Luigi makes a return in the second Switch iteration, Mario Party Superstars. Unlike its predecessor, Superstars is a collection of classic minigames, boards, and mechanics from the Mario Party series' history.
Mario Strikers: Battle League Football (2022)
Luigi is featured as one of 16 playable characters in Mario Strikers: Battle League Football, the latest Mario soccer/football game. As a well-balanced player, Luigi excels in technique, enhancing his ability to dribble, curve shots, and shoot accurately.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope (2022)
Luigi (and Rabbid Luigi) returned in Ubisoft and Nintendo's tactical sequel, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. Luigi is categorized as a Sneak Attacker, equipped with ranged weaponry but with lower health.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023)
In the latest 2D Mario platformer, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Luigi serves as a playable alternative to Mario. Here, the difference between the brothers is purely visual, as they play identically.
Super Mario Party Jamboree (2024)
Luigi is, unsurprisingly, playable in Super Mario Party Jamboree, the largest and arguably best game in Nintendo’s flagship party series. In addition to being a playable character, Luigi features in Jamboree’s new Buddy mechanic, which can change a player's dice rolls to 10s.
