The Kingdom Hearts series is poised for a major transformation with the upcoming release of Kingdom Hearts 4. Series creator Tetsuya Nomura recently shared insights in an interview with Young Jump, translated by KH13, suggesting that the fourth installment could mark a pivotal moment for the franchise. As fans eagerly anticipate this new chapter, Nomura's revelations provide a glimpse into the future direction of the series.
Tetsuya Nomura Hints at the Series' Conclusion with Kingdom Hearts 4
Kingdom Hearts 4 Will See the Story Reset, Said Nomura
Nomura emphasized that Kingdom Hearts 4 is being crafted "with the intention of it being a story that leads to the conclusion." While this doesn't confirm the series' end, it suggests that the game will initiate the "Lost Master Arc," a fresh narrative that welcomes both new and veteran players without requiring deep prior knowledge of the series' intricate plots.
"If you remember how the ending of Kingdom Hearts III goes, you'll understand that Sora ends up like that because he's 'resetting' the story in a way," Nomura explained. "So Kingdom Hearts IV should be easier to get into than before. I think that if you like the series, you'll feel like 'this is it', but I'm also hoping that as many new players as possible will play it."
While Nomura's comments hint at a potential conclusion to the main storyline, the series' history of twists and turns leaves room for interpretation and possible future spin-offs. The rich cast of characters could inspire new adventures, especially with Nomura's announcement of new writers joining the team to contribute to the Kingdom Hearts universe.
"Both Kingdom Hearts Missing Link and Kingdom Hearts IV have been created with a stronger focus on being new titles rather than sequels," Nomura told Young Jump. "For example, as a new experiment, we have had staff who have not been involved in the Kingdom Hearts series before participate in writing the scenario. Of course, I will be editing it in the end, but I don't think it will be positioned as a work that needs to be done in the sense that the writer who has never been involved in the 'Kingdom Hearts' series is creating a new base."
The inclusion of new writers promises to inject fresh perspectives into the series, potentially enhancing the narrative and gameplay while preserving the essence that fans adore. These new voices could explore uncharted territories within the Disney and Square Enix crossover.
Nomura's creative vision has been central to the series' success, yet he has hinted at his retirement in a few years. He poses a challenge to himself: "If this isn't a dream, then I only have a few years left until I retire, and it's looking like: will I retire or will I finish the series first?"
New Arc, New Beginnings
Announced in April 2022, Kingdom Hearts 4 is currently in development, with its first trailer introducing the "Lost Master Arc." The story begins with Sora waking up in Quadratum, a world Nomura described as an alternate reality reminiscent of Tokyo but with a dream-like quality. He has had this concept in mind since the development of the first game.
"From each of our perspectives, our perceptions change," Nomura said, translated by VGC. "From Sora's perspective, Quadratum is an underworld, a fictional world that is different from reality. But from the point of view of the inhabitants on the Quadratum side, the world of Quadratum is reality, and the world where Sora and the others were is the other side, the fictional world."
Quadratum offers a more grounded and realistic setting compared to the whimsical Disney-centric worlds of past games. Due to increased visual fidelity, the number of Disney worlds will be reduced, as Nomura explained to GameInformer in 2022: "With regards to Kingdom Hearts IV, players are definitely going to see a few Disney worlds in there. Since each new title, the specs have been really increasing, and there's so much more we can do in terms of graphics, it kind of limits the number of worlds that we can create in a sense. At this time, we're considering how to approach that, but there will be Disney worlds in Kingdom Hearts IV."
While the reduction of Disney worlds may disappoint some fans, Nomura's focus on streamlining the narrative could simplify the series' complexity, making it more accessible to newcomers and more engaging for long-time fans.
Whether Kingdom Hearts 4 concludes the series or initiates a new era, it represents a significant milestone in Sora's journey. For many fans, witnessing the series potentially come full circle under Nomura's guidance will be a poignant and epic conclusion to a saga that has spanned over two decades.
