Your first encounter with Rompopolo happens in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. You'll meet this monster in the Oilwell Basin region as you journey toward Azuz City. Defeating Rompopolo is necessary to progress in the story. Once you've defeated it at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide, allowing you to engage with it repeatedly either by exploring the Oilwell Basin or by starting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare effectively for this battle, arm yourself with water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, equip gear with fire resistance, which you can farm from Uth Duna for the belt and greaves, or from Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I, or a general defense charm like Defense Charm I. Before heading into the fight, don't forget to boost your health and stamina by grilling a meal.

Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo's unique features include its saggy skin that inflates with gas, used for various gas-related attacks that can cause explosions. Be aware that it can also inflict poison, so bring Antidotes and utilize your Palico's ability to cleanse ailments.

Key attacks to watch out for include:

  • Arm Swipe: Rompopolo will swipe forward with its clawed arms twice. This attack has limited range and is easy to dodge.
  • Lunge With Arm Swipe: It charges forward while raising its arms to perform an arcing swipe.
  • Tail Swing: Rompopolo swings its tail at its target.
  • Poison Stream or Swipe: It either sprays a stream of poison gas or charges forward while swinging its head and spraying poison.
  • Oil Explosion: From a distance, Rompopolo uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing explosions. Dodge these to avoid damage.
  • Charged Oil Explosion: Later in the fight, it will curl its tail and pump more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodging is crucial to avoid significant damage.

Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

At the end of the battle, you can choose to either kill or capture Rompopolo. To capture, weaken it until your Palico notes it looks "tired," then use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it. Once trapped, use at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out and complete the capture.
