These five cards form what designers call a "cycle" - sharing design principles across Magic's five colors. Each features a low-cost, common-rarity creature with abilities tied to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, along with mana-fixing capabilities.

"Three-color limited environments require substantial mana fixing across all rarities," explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. "We prioritized accessible mana solutions, creating numerous designs specifically addressing this challenge. Unlike tapped lands that slow gameplay, these creatures let players develop their board presence while simultaneously fixing their mana base."

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond explains that while mechanics drove this cycle's creation, common cards frequently serve as worldbuilding showcases. "We've evolved each clan's identity since players last visited Tarkir - the action-focused Jeskai monks, Temur magic wielders called Whispers, Sultai Nagas defending their jungles, the diverse dragonforms within Mardu military structures, and Abzan clerics restoring their sacred kin trees."

Unlike recent Magic sets that leaned heavily on thematic gimmicks, Dragonstorm presents a more grounded return to Tarkir's core identity. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl notes that while player feedback is valued, Dragonstorm's creative vision was locked in before recent set releases: "Our mission fused dragons and clans in unprecedented ways while making Dragonstorms central to gameplay. Lauren and I felt tremendous responsibility to honor this beloved plane with authentic storytelling and meaningful evolution."
