Destiny 2 Username Glitch: Bungie Responds
Free Name Change Tokens on the Way
Following a recent update (around August 14th), many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been unexpectedly replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This widespread issue stemmed from a glitch in Bungie's name moderation system.
Bungie acknowledged the problem via Twitter (X), stating they were investigating the cause and planned to provide all players with a free name change token as compensation. Their automated system typically alters usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.), but this time, numerous players with perfectly acceptable names were affected – some who'd had the same name since 2015.
Bungie swiftly identified and fixed the underlying server-side issue responsible for the accidental name changes, preventing further occurrences. They confirmed the plan to distribute name change tokens remains in effect and promised further updates.
Players impacted by the unintentional username changes are advised to remain patient and await further announcements from Bungie regarding the token distribution. The developers are actively working to resolve the situation and keep players informed.
