Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation

Director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, recently provided an update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, the project has faced delays. While original director Josh Trank departed due to scheduling conflicts, Muschietti confirmed the project remains active.

The director acknowledged the extensive development time, stating that factors beyond creative ambition, including the IP's popularity and budgetary considerations, are influencing the project's timeline. He confirmed the existence of a preferred script among several versions.

This adaptation joins other recent Sony game-to-film announcements, including a Helldivers movie, a Horizon Zero Dawn film, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project, all revealed at CES 2025.

Muschietti, while not a self-described "big gamer," considers Shadow of the Colossus a masterpiece and has played it multiple times. He recognizes the game's unique atmosphere and the impact of its colossal enemies, noting similarities in Capcom's 2024 title, Dragon's Dogma 2.

The game's creator, Fumito Ueda, has since founded GenDesign, and recently unveiled a new sci-fi game at The Game Awards 2024. This new project hints at a continuation of the evocative isolation found in the original 2005 Shadow of the Colossus. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remaster, the legacy of Shadow of the Colossus continues its journey towards a live-action adaptation, aiming to captivate existing fans and introduce new audiences to its captivating world.
