Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & White Guardian: A Gacha-Free Spinoff
Koei Tecmo Europe recently announced that the upcoming Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & White Guardian will notably not include a gacha system, unlike its mobile predecessor, Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator. This news, shared via Twitter (X) on November 26, 2024, is a significant departure for the series.
The absence of a gacha system means players won't encounter paywalls hindering progression. Character unlocks and powerful item acquisition won't require in-app purchases.
Furthermore, the new title is designed for offline play, eliminating the need to interact with its mobile counterpart. The official website teases “New protagonists and an original story await in Lantarna,” suggesting a shared world but distinct narrative and characters.
Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & White Guardian is slated for release on PS5, PS4, Switch, and Steam in 2025. Pricing and a precise release date remain unannounced.
A Look at the Mobile Predecessor's Gacha System
In contrast to its upcoming console and PC sibling, Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator (released January 2024 on Steam, Android, and iOS) utilizes a gacha mechanic. While retaining core Atelier elements like synthesis and turn-based combat, the mobile game requires players to invest money to enhance or acquire characters.
This gacha system employs a “spark” mechanic, awarding medals with each pull towards character or Memoria (illustration card) unlocks. The acquisition of these rewards requires a specific gem expenditure per pull and medal accumulation, differing from a standard “pity” system. While the mobile versions garnered positive reviews (4.2/5 on Google Play, 4.6 on the App Store), the Steam release received a “Mixed” rating, with some players citing the costly gacha mechanic as a significant drawback.
