Ys VIII: Defeating Dularn Guide

Quick Links

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana presents players with numerous challenging boss encounters. The initial boss, Dularn, the Creeping Shadow, often proves a significant hurdle for many players. This encounter marks a notable increase in difficulty, making it a true test of skill. While initially daunting, mastering Dularn's attack patterns allows for a relatively swift victory.

How to Defeat Dularn in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana

The battle begins with Dularn encased in a protective energy barrier. No attacks can penetrate this shield, requiring players to focus on evasion until the barrier dissipates. Once the barrier drops, players have a brief window to unleash a series of attacks. Dularn's health varies based on the chosen difficulty level. While players can retreat to regain strength, defeating Dularn is mandatory to progress.

Maintaining distance from Dularn while his barrier is active is crucial, as contact inflicts damage. Rushing in during this phase guarantees defeat.

Dularn's Sword Attacks

Dularn employs various sword attacks:

  • A volley of swords descending from above.
  • An X-shaped formation of swords homing in on the player.
  • A straight line of swords thrust towards the player.

These homing attacks can be challenging. The most effective strategy during the barrier phase is to maintain a wide circular movement around Dularn. This provides ample space to dodge the initial two sword attacks. However, depending on sword placement, jumping is often necessary as a secondary evasion technique. The straight line attack requires precise timing: jump immediately before impact to avoid damage.

Exploit the moments when Dularn's barrier falls to inflict significant damage. After each barrage of attacks, he will teleport, reforming his barrier upon reappearance. Keep your distance to avoid damage.

Dularn's Energy Blasts

Dularn unleashes two types of energy blasts: fireballs and an arching slash.

Fireballs

Dodge these fireballs by moving between them or jumping over incoming projectiles. Combining movement and jumping ensures optimal evasion.

Arching Slash

This large blue slash leaves no openings for evasion; jumping is the only effective countermeasure. This attack often precedes the opportunity to damage Dularn, serving as a cue for an offensive push.

Understanding Dularn's attack patterns is key to victory; grinding for higher levels is unnecessary.
