'It Does Real Harm to Artists of All Kinds' — Balatro Dev Localthunk Steps In to Resolve AI Art Reddit Fiasco

Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, intervened in a dispute on the game's subreddit regarding AI-generated art. A former moderator, DrTankHead, who also moderates a NSFW Balatro subreddit, had previously stated that AI art would be permitted on both subreddits, provided it was properly attributed and tagged. This statement, however, contradicted Localthunk and publisher Playstack's stance.

Localthunk subsequently issued a statement on Bluesky and the main Balatro subreddit clarifying that neither they nor Playstack condone the use of AI-generated imagery. The developer removed DrTankHead from the main subreddit's moderation team and announced a ban on AI-generated images going forward, promising to update the subreddit's rules and FAQ accordingly.

Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the subreddit's previous rules regarding AI content lacked clarity, leading to misinterpretations. The remaining moderators are working to revise the rules to prevent future ambiguity.

DrTankHead, in a post on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, confirmed their removal and stated that while they don't intend to make the subreddit AI-centric, they are considering allowing non-NSFW AI-generated art on specific days. This suggestion was met with a user's suggestion to take a break from Reddit.

The debate highlights the ongoing controversy surrounding AI art in the video game industry. This controversy is fueled by ethical and rights concerns, as well as AI's limitations in producing high-quality, enjoyable content. Keywords Studios' failed experiment in creating an AI-driven game underscores these challenges. Despite these concerns, major players like EA and Capcom are actively exploring the use of generative AI in game development, with Activision recently acknowledging its use in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, albeit amidst criticism.
