After over a decade of requests from the community, The Elder Scrolls Online is finally introducing the highly anticipated subclass feature. Discover how this system works and what other updates are planned for the game's future.
Direct Updates for The Elder Scrolls Online
Unlock Over 3,000 Skill Line Combinations

The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) marks its 10th anniversary this year, and ZeniMax Online Studios has prepared significant updates for the game. During the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10, the developers confirmed that the long-requested subclassing feature is coming soon.
Players have long expressed interest in the ability to switch between classes. Each time a new skill tree is introduced, gamers are forced to create new characters to access the latest content—a tedious process in an MMO. The addition of subclasses will now enable players to combine and customize skill lines without needing to restart their progress.

To unlock subclasses, players must reach level 50. They will keep one skill line from their original class and can exchange the other two for any of the six available classes. This system offers more than 3,000 possible combinations, empowering players to refine their unique playstyle.
Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new subclass feature, explaining that the development team conducted extensive testing. Although an increase in overall player power is anticipated, Lambert stated the team is comfortable with the current balance.
Seasons of the Worm Cult

ZeniMax Online is transitioning to a seasonal content model, which Studio Director Matt Firor said will encourage creative experimentation and faster response to player feedback.
Firor elaborated, "Our goal is to continue delivering compelling stories while integrating fresh concepts and gameplay mechanics. We'll maintain this approach but adjust our release schedule to give developers more flexibility and expand the variety of content."

The new chapter, titled Seasons of the Worm Cult, continues the original Molag Bal narrative after ten years. Set on the Isle of Solstice, this new zone challenges players to uncover the reason behind the Worm Cult's return.
According to Producer Susan Kath, while the Seasons of the Worm Cult will span most of the year, future seasons are expected to last between three and six months. ZeniMax also plans "remix" seasons that revisit past storylines, hinting at an upcoming season inspired by the Dark Brotherhood.
