A planned paid DLC for the popular game Hogwarts Legacy has been canceled, according to a recent report by Bloomberg. Warner Bros. had intended to release a story expansion for the Harry Potter-themed adventure game this year, alongside a "Definitive Edition" of the game. However, the project was canceled this week, reportedly because the content volume was deemed insufficient to justify the proposed price, as per Bloomberg's sources. Warner Bros. did not provide a comment when approached by Bloomberg.
This cancellation comes amidst a broader restructuring of Warner Bros.' gaming division, which has been grappling with financial challenges. Earlier this year, the company canceled its planned Wonder Woman game and shut down the studio responsible for its development, Monolith Productions, along with WB San Diego and the studio behind MultiVersus, Player First Games. Additionally, Warner Bros. implemented layoffs at Rocksteady Studios just last September.
Despite the cancellation of the Hogwarts Legacy DLC, Warner Bros. continues to emphasize the importance of the Harry Potter franchise within its portfolio. The company has repeatedly stated that both Hogwarts Legacy and the broader Harry Potter universe are key assets, with a sequel to the game being described as "one of the biggest priorities." This focus aligns with Warner Bros.' strategy to concentrate on fewer, yet larger, franchises. The original Hogwarts Legacy has achieved significant commercial success, selling over 30 million copies.
