The ninth annual TennoCon has proven to be an unforgettable event, showcasing the relentless momentum of the Warframe community. The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly the unveiling of Warframe: 1999, set to be one of the most ambitious updates in the series' history.

To prepare for this monumental update, a prologue quest titled "The Lotus Eaters" will be released in August 2024. This quest will reconnect players with one of Warframe's most beloved characters and follows the storyline of "Whispers in the Walls," setting the stage for the world of 1999. Alongside the prologue, Sevatgoth Prime and their exclusive weapons will be introduced. To dive into Warframe: 1999, players must complete all story content up to and including "The Lotus Eaters" before the update's release in Winter 2024.

Set in the titular year, Warframe: 1999 takes place on an alternate earth where the Y2K virus poses a lethal threat to civilization. The action unfolds in Höllvania, a city steeped in 90s nostalgia but corrupted by Techrot. Players will navigate this environment using the new Atomicycles, vehicles capable of bullet jumps, drifts, and even serving as improvised explosives. Leading the charge are the six heroes known as the Hex, each donning a Protoframe that highlights their human essence.

The Hex is led by Arthur, who wields Excalibur, and includes members like Aoi with Mag and Quincy sporting the new CYTE-09 frame. This frame will also be available in the Origin system, complete with a stylish beret. The team is voiced by a talented ensemble including Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and Amelia Tyler, known for her recent role in Baldur's Gate 3. Players can deepen their connections with these characters through in-game instant messaging, adding a touch of 1999 nostalgia.

Embracing the era's culture, players will encounter On-lyne, a 90s boy band led by Zeke, voiced by Nick Apostolides, who has been transformed into an infected adversary by the Technocyte Coda. Despite their new role as foes, their music remains catchy, with their hit single "Party of Your Lifetime" now available on streaming platforms.

One of the most exciting aspects of the update is the enhancement of the fashion system, a beloved feature among players. The update introduces the ability to switch between two fashion frame loadouts during battle, and the new Gemini Skins allow players to bring Protoframes like Arthur and Aoi into the Origin system. These skins are available for specific frames like Excalibur and come with extensive voice lines, adding depth to the characters and enhancing the player experience.

Anime Arthur and Aoi

Beyond the main event, Digital Extremes announced a collaboration with animation studio THE LINE to produce an anime short related to Warframe: 1999, set to launch later this year. Additionally, players can now acquire the high-fidelity Heirloom skin for Ember, with a Rhino skin to follow in early 2025.

With Warframe: 1999 slated for release in Winter 2024, there's plenty of content to explore and enjoy in the meantime. Make sure to download Warframe now from the App Store to stay ahead of the curve.
