"Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatible with Non-GameCube Games, Possible Issues"

Nintendo has officially addressed concerns regarding the compatibility of its newly released GameCube controller, confirming that while it may work with some Nintendo Switch 2 titles, there could be "issues" when using it for modern games.

The GameCube controller made its debut during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct broadcast earlier this month. At that time, details in small print indicated that the controller was explicitly designed for use with GameCube titles available via the Nintendo Switch Online service—and not for other Switch 2 games. Now, Nintendo has clarified and expanded upon that statement.

According to the company, the retro-styled GameCube controller was built primarily for playing Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection titles. While players *might* be able to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, there are no guarantees due to the lack of modern control features—like additional buttons and inputs—that newer titles often require.

Nintendo also reiterated that the GameCube controller is strictly compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 console and will not function with the original Nintendo Switch system.

"The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and serves as an optional way to experience those titles," Nintendo stated in a recent clarification provided to Nintendo Life.

"Due to the absence of certain buttons and functionalities found in more modern controllers, there may be some issues when attempting to play other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller is only supported on the Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with the original Nintendo Switch."

Over time, the library is expected to grow, with upcoming additions like *Super Mario Sunshine*, *Luigi's Mansion*, *Super Mario Strikers*, and *Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness* already teased.
