Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, a decision that might not come as a surprise to many fans familiar with the company's history of game cancellations. The mobile game, in development since 2019, had undergone several closed beta tests on both Android and iOS platforms. The announcement of its delay in November 2024 left participants of the closed beta tests somewhat surprised, given the apparent progress of the project.
Why Was Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Cancelled?
The development team cited their inability to find a sustainable path forward that would meet player expectations in the long term. Initially designed as a live-service game, Missing-Link aimed to offer a unique, GPS-based experience where players could explore real-world locations and engage in battles against Heartless using their keyblades. This ambitious project was set to explore a forgotten chapter of the Kingdom Hearts saga, but it seems the concept struggled to translate into a satisfying gameplay experience. Square Enix ultimately decided against releasing a subpar product, choosing instead to redirect their resources.
