Splitgate 2: The Highly Anticipated Sequel Arrives in 2025

1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter Splitgate, have announced a sequel launching in 2025. This new installment, Splitgate 2, promises a fresh take on the fast-paced arena shooter experience that captivated millions.

A Familiar Formula, Reimagined

Revealed with a cinematic trailer on July 18th, Splitgate 2 aims for longevity. CEO Ian Proulx stated the goal is to create a game that thrives for a decade or more. While the original drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the developers recognized the need for innovative gameplay mechanics to ensure lasting appeal. This led to a re-evaluation of the core portal mechanic, aiming for a balanced experience that rewards skilled players without making portal usage mandatory for success.

Built using Unreal Engine 5, Splitgate 2 will remain free-to-play and introduce a faction system adding strategic depth. Expect familiar elements, but with a completely revamped look and feel. The game is slated for release in 2025 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

The original Splitgate, known for its unique portal-based gameplay, achieved remarkable success after its demo release, garnering 600,000 downloads in a single month. This popularity led to server upgrades to handle the influx of players. After a period in early access, the original Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022, with the developers announcing a pause on updates to focus on creating Splitgate 2.

New Factions, Maps, and More

The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and introduced three distinct factions, each offering unique playstyles: Aeros (dashing mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). While details are scarce, the developers confirmed Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter.

Gameplay details will be revealed at Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), but the trailer hints at exciting new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding.

A Deeper Dive into Lore

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will allow players to explore the game's lore through comics, collect character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
