Sony has announced that starting in January 2026, it will no longer include PlayStation 4 (PS4) games in its PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog, shifting its focus entirely to PlayStation 5 (PS5). This change was revealed alongside the February 2025 monthly game titles on the PlayStation Blog.

"As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog," Sony stated. This transition will not affect the PS4 games that subscribers have already claimed. However, PS4 titles in the Games Catalog will remain available until they are rotated out of the service as part of the regular monthly updates.

Sony also emphasized its commitment to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising continued improvements and optimizations. "We’ll continue to evolve the experience of PlayStation Plus and optimize the benefits you receive, including exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, online game save storage, and more," the company added. "As we shift our focus to PS5, we look forward to adding new PS5 titles monthly for you to enjoy."

With the arrival of the PS5 in 2020, the gaming landscape has shifted significantly. Sony noted, "many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles."

It remains uncertain whether Sony will reclassify PS4 games into the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters from PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. Sony is expected to provide more details on these potential changes as the transition date approaches.
