Sims 5 May Never Come as EA Hopes to Break from Sequel Model

For years, fans have anticipated The Sims 5. However, EA is shifting its strategy, moving away from numbered sequels and embracing a more expansive approach to the franchise. This article explores EA's vision for "The Sims Universe."

EA's Expanding "Sims Universe"

The Sims 4: The Franchise's Foundation

The traditional numbered sequel model is being abandoned. EA recognizes the enduring popularity of The Sims 4, which has seen over 1.2 billion hours of playtime in 2024 alone. Instead of a Sims 5 replacement, EA plans to continuously update The Sims 4, Project Rene, MySims, and The Sims FreePlay.

EA VP Kate Gorman explained this new direction to Variety, stating that future development will focus on expanding the existing universe rather than replacing previous iterations. This approach allows for more frequent updates, diverse gameplay, cross-media content, and a wider range of offerings.

The Sims 4 will continue to receive updates, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements. A dedicated team was formed in May to address technical issues. EA's entertainment and technology president, Laura Miele, confirmed The Sims 4's role as the foundation for future growth, promising ongoing content and core technology updates.

A new feature, Sims Creator Kits, will allow players to purchase community-created digital content. Gorman highlighted the importance of the community and EA's commitment to fairly compensating creators. These kits will launch in November across all Sims platforms.

Project Rene: Not Sims 5, But Close

While rumors of Sims 5 persist, EA has unveiled Project Rene. Described as a platform for social interaction and shared gameplay in a new world, Project Rene will feature a multiplayer aspect, a key feature absent from the franchise since The Sims Online. A limited playtest is planned for this fall.

Gorman emphasized the lessons learned from The Sims Online and the desire to create a social, real-time multiplayer experience while retaining the core simulation elements. EA will celebrate its 25th anniversary in January 2025 with a "Behind The Sims" presentation.

The Sims Movie: Lore and Easter Eggs Confirmed

EA confirmed a film adaptation of The Sims, a collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. The movie will be deeply rooted in Sims lore and include easter eggs familiar to longtime players. Margot Robbie's LuckyChap is producing, with Kate Herron directing. Gorman confirmed the inclusion of classic Sims elements like Freezer Bunnies and pool ladders.
