The traditional numbered sequel model is being abandoned. EA recognizes the enduring popularity of The Sims 4, which has seen over 1.2 billion hours of playtime in 2024 alone. Instead of a Sims 5 replacement, EA plans to continuously update The Sims 4, Project Rene, MySims, and The Sims FreePlay.

EA VP Kate Gorman explained this new direction to Variety, stating that future development will focus on expanding the existing universe rather than replacing previous iterations. This approach allows for more frequent updates, diverse gameplay, cross-media content, and a wider range of offerings.

EA's entertainment and technology president, Laura Miele, confirmed The Sims 4's role as the foundation for future growth, promising ongoing content and core technology updates.
