Scalebound: Hints of a Possible Revival?

Scalebound was once heralded as one of the most innovative action games, seamlessly blending dynamic combat, immersive music, and a groundbreaking system of interaction with a colossal dragon companion. Announced in 2014, this ambitious Xbox One exclusive stirred considerable excitement among gamers. However, the project faced an unexpected halt when Microsoft officially canceled its development in 2017.

Recently, Clovers Inc's official account on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his team revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. In the video, Kamiya reflects fondly on the game's development journey and expresses continued pride in the project, despite its cancellation. He amplified the sentiment by retweeting the video with a direct message to Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's gaming division, saying, "Come on, Phil, let's do this!". This plea underscores Kamiya's persistent interest in reviving the game, a desire he has voiced before, notably in early 2022 when he mentioned wanting to revisit the project with Microsoft.

The prospect of Scalebound's return has been a recurring topic of discussion, with rumors intensifying in early 2023 about a potential reboot. Despite these speculations, Microsoft has yet to make any official announcements. When questioned about Scalebound by the Japanese publication Game Watch, Phil Spencer responded with a cryptic smile and a non-committal, "I have nothing to add at this time."

Even if Microsoft shows renewed interest, fans shouldn't anticipate a swift revival. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is deeply involved in developing a new installment of Okami at Clovers Inc. Should Xbox give the nod to Scalebound's revival, Kamiya's involvement would likely commence only after his current commitments are fulfilled. Nonetheless, the enduring interest in Scalebound offers a glimmer of hope that this long-awaited game might eventually see the light of day.
