Rockstar Games' latest release, Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced, which hit the market on March 4, has stirred up quite the controversy on Steam. Despite the promise of enhanced features and improved gameplay, the game has earned a 'mixed' user review rating, with only 54% of the 19,772 reviews being positive. This rating puts GTA 5 Enhanced in a less favorable light compared to its predecessor, the original GTA 5, which boasts a 'very positive' review status on the platform, though it's now unlisted at Rockstar's request.
The new version, which is a free upgrade for existing PC owners of GTA 5, brings sought-after features like Hao’s Special Works, animal encounters, and the ability to purchase a GTA+ Membership, previously exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions. It also promises enhanced graphics options and faster loading times. However, the excitement around these updates has been overshadowed by widespread issues with account migration, which is crucial for transferring Story Mode and Online progress to the new version.
Many players have voiced their frustrations over the migration process, with numerous negative reviews highlighting the problem. One review expressed a strong sentiment: "‘The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time,’ If you think I'm throwing away nearly 700 hours of gameplay on one character so that you can make a few more bucks off me, then you can lick my anal orifice clean. This is an objective downgrade from the ‘old’ version. Gonna pretend this was never released and continue to enjoy Legacy version until the new game comes out when I'm 60." Another review stated, "I'm leaving a negative review mainly due to Rockstar deciding that some accounts should arbitrarily not be able to migrate, and if you ask for help from support, they just say they can't do anything about it." A third reviewer added, "I can't migrate either of my two accounts. R* support is completely useless and can't help. With the game being over 10 years old I am sure as hell not going to completely restart all my progress in Online just to get marginally better graphics (if that) and HSW and whatever other minuscule stuff they added."
Despite these challenges, GTA 5 Enhanced remains popular, with a peak concurrent player count of 187,059 on Steam since its launch. However, the rocky rollout has sparked concerns among PC gamers about the future release of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is slated to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in the fall of 2025, with no confirmed PC release date yet. A former Rockstar developer's attempt to reassure PC gamers in December 2023, asking them to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt," has done little to quell the unease.
In related news, Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, has taken legal action against PlayerAuctions, alleging the online marketplace hosts unauthorized GTA 5 content. Additionally, Rockstar has recently acquired and renamed Video Games Deluxe, the developer behind Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, to Rockstar Australia.
