The inaugural title in the Naruto: Path of the Ninja series, Naruto: Konoha Ninpōchō, was released in 2003 exclusively for the Bandai WonderSwan Color in Japan. This handheld console, launched in 1999, never saw an international release, much like the game itself. The storyline of Konoha Ninpōchō centers on the Land of Waves arc, supplemented by additional missions undertaken by Team 7.

Following closely, Naruto: Konoha Senki also debuted in 2003, but this time for the Game Boy Advance, developed by the Japanese toy company Tomy. This game, too, was exclusive to Japan. It covers the narrative from the first 70 episodes of the series, including the Land of Waves and Chūnin Exams arcs. Initially, players can only control Team 7 and Kakashi, with the option to unlock more characters after the first playthrough.

Despite its name suggesting otherwise, Naruto: Path of the Ninja is actually the third installment in the series. Developed by Tomy and released in 2004, it initially launched on the Nintendo DS in Japan before being ported to the Game Boy Advance for a worldwide audience. The game's storyline encompasses the early arcs of the anime, culminating in the Chūnin Exams arc.
