The upcoming beat 'em up, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, is packed with references to the classic franchise, including last year's reunion special, Once and Always. Robo Rita, the main antagonist from that special, returns as the primary villain in this new game. Announced at Summer Games Fest 2024, this retro-style brawler features five-player co-op, enemies from the first three Power Rangers seasons, and even 3D rail-shooter segments. It's launching on PC and consoles later this year.

Power Rangers fans have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions recently, with the show's future uncertain following Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always and Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury. Once and Always saw the original team reunite to thwart a robotic Rita Repulsa from altering the past. The special included numerous Easter eggs and emotional tributes, notably honoring Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank.

Robo Rita's role as the main villain in Rita's Rewind is a direct sequel to her actions in Once and Always. Digital Eclipse content editor Dan Amrich explained in a Time Express interview that Robo Rita's attempt to erase the Power Rangers from existence in the special provided a perfect in-universe connection for the new game.

Amrich also shared how Digital Eclipse pitched the game to Hasbro, who were looking to expand their franchises. Inspiration came from classic 2D brawlers popular during the original MMPR's run, with plenty of Easter eggs for longtime fans.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind is a loving tribute to the franchise, blending classic gameplay with modern lore. While its release is slated for later this year, fans can currently enjoy a crossover with ARK: Survival Ascended.
