Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story

In an exclusive reveal to IGN, the creators of *A Minecraft Movie* shared one of the film’s most unexpectedly hilarious moments — a scene that not only delivers physical comedy gold but also draws direct inspiration from *The NeverEnding Story*.

The scene in question features Jack Black’s version of Steve hitching a ride on Jason Momoa’s character, Garrett. With only two Elytra wings available for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen’s Henry, Steve must awkwardly maneuver across Garrett mid-air to avoid plummeting from the sky. What results is a visually comedic and action-packed moment that had more than laughs in mind.

“We really wanted that Falkor moment from *The NeverEnding Story* — something majestic and beautiful that quickly spirals into chaos,” explained director Jared Hess.

Producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson added, “It was hilarious between takes. Jack would be sitting on top of Jason in this elaborate rig, and he’d just start singing *The NeverEnding Story* like he was riding Falkor. It brought such a fun energy to the set.”

This clever nod resonates even more knowing that Jack Black previously played Slip in *The NeverEnding Story 3*. For Jason Momoa, the sequence became a collaborative highlight where he helped shape the humor and stunt choreography.

“I got to help write part of that scene, and Jack was totally game,” Momoa laughed. “This was right after *Top Gun: Maverick*, so I wanted to bring some of that flight precision — hit the throttle, pull back, slide down, then switch it up. We were cracking up at the idea of us doing this together, and it actually made it into the movie. It turned out amazing!”

Jack Black chimed in with a grin: “I’m not sure if all versions made the final cut, but we definitely went hard during filming. Could’ve been rated R! But in the end, we kept it fun and family-friendly.”

Momoa also recounted the absurdity of the shoot with great humor (and you’ll want to watch the full video for the visual payoff).

“Let my hips guide you! You can’t just ride me like I’m majestic,” he joked. “I was dying laughing, man. Absolutely dying.”
