The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a film adaptation date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were brought on to write the script, but the project ultimately didn't move forward. Subsequent attempts in 2015 involved Lionsgate and Hasbro, with Andrew Niccol writing the screenplay, and in 2019, there were plans to involve actor Kevin Hart and director Tim Story. However, none of these iterations came to fruition.

The recent acquisition of eOne by Lionsgate from Hasbro has breathed new life into the project, setting the stage for Daley and Goldstein to steer the Monopoly movie towards success. With their proven track record and the backing of Margot Robbie's LuckyChap, there's high hope that this version will indeed pass Go and make it to the theaters.
