Legendary Pokemon TCG Artist Rejoins Magic: The Gathering

Author: Gabriel May 28,2025

Mitsuhiro Arita, a renowned artist celebrated for his work on the original Pokemon Trading Card Game, including the iconic Charizard card, has now turned his talents to Magic: The Gathering with a new Secret Lair drop. We're excited to offer you a first look at all four cards featured in this special collection.

While this isn't Arita's first foray into Magic: The Gathering, having previously illustrated a borderless Lumra, Bellow of the Woods for last year's Bloomburrow set, this new Secret Lair drop represents a significant expansion of his contributions to the game. The release of four new cards so soon after his initial work marks a notable milestone.

These cards aren't just beautiful; they're also highly functional across various Magic formats. The legendary Lightning Bolt is a staple in nearly every format where it's legal, while Murktide Regent has been a dominant force in Modern and Legacy since its debut in Modern Horizons 2 in 2021. Light-Paws stands out as a beloved Commander, and Shorikai has not only secured a spot in many Vintage Cubes but is also ranked as the 20th most popular Commander according to EDHRec.

Wizards of the Coast highlights this drop on their store page, stating, "With nearly 30 years of experience creating beloved art for trading card games, Mitsuhiro Arita’s work has become some of the most recognizable in the world. His first collaboration with Magic: The Gathering was on a borderless Lumra, Bellow of the Woods released in 2024’s Bloomburrow, which quickly became a fan-favorite. In this Secret Lair Drop, the legendary artist returns to showcase his iconic creature design across four remarkable cards."

As with other Secret Lair drops, this one will be available on the Secret Lair website in non-foil for $29.99 and foil for $39.99, available only while supplies last. The drop goes live on Monday, February 10 at 9am PT. Given the high demand and quick sell-outs typical of Secret Lairs since Wizards of the Coast shifted from a timed print-to-order system, fans should be ready to purchase as soon as they're available to avoid missing out.
