Square Enix has announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the anticipated GPS-based action-RPG for mobile devices. The game, set to explore the realm of Scala ad Caelum with a new, original story in the ongoing battle against the Heartless, was initially scheduled for release in 2024. Despite the setback, there's a silver lining for Kingdom Hearts fans as Square Enix assures that they are "hard at work" on Kingdom Hearts 4.

In a statement shared on the game's X/Twitter account, Square Enix expressed their "heartfelt apologies to everyone who have been looking forward" to Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. The decision to cancel the project stemmed from the difficulty in ensuring the game would provide a satisfying service over an extended period. The statement did not provide specific details on the challenges faced during development.

"We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service," the statement read. "Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development."

Square Enix extended gratitude to those who participated in the multiple closed beta tests and acknowledged their support and assistance. "We are truly sorry to have to make this announcement," they added.

Despite the cancellation, Square Enix reaffirmed their commitment to the Kingdom Hearts franchise, stating that the "Kingdom Hearts series will continue." They also provided a hopeful update for fans, mentioning ongoing development of Kingdom Hearts 4 and encouraging continued support as they look forward to further updates.

This update marks the first official mention of Kingdom Hearts 4 in months, following a tiny, cryptic tease back in January. Despite its reveal in September 2022 with a full cinematic trailer, Square Enix has maintained a low profile on the project, leaving fans eager for more information. Series director Tetsuya Nomura has hinted that Kingdom Hearts 4 will finally begin to steer the narrative towards its conclusion after 22 years and 18 games in the series.
