IGN can exclusively reveal that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be playable at a major Australian museum in September 2025.

Team Cherry’s long-awaited sequel continues to top the Steam wishlist chart, maintaining its status as one of the most anticipated games in the world. While the Adelaide-based studio has only confirmed a 2025 release window, fans now have a concrete milestone to look forward to: Silksong will be playable at ACMI—Australia’s national museum of screen culture—in Melbourne starting September 18.

The game will feature prominently in ACMI’s upcoming exhibition, Game Worlds, which explores the artistry and design behind iconic video games. The Silksong showcase will include in-depth displays on its animation, boss fight mechanics, and artistic vision, offering fans a rare behind-the-scenes look at the development process.

ACMI co-curators Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell shared their excitement: “Since Hollow Knight: Silksong’s initial announcement in 2019, it has been one of the most anticipated indie games on the planet—and we are thrilled to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made game as a centerpiece of Game Worlds in September.

“From the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s movements and attacks, to the intricate logic behind the game’s toughest boss fights—and of course, having the game playable in-gallery—our Silksong displays dive deep into the details of its artistic direction and design. We’re so grateful to Team Cherry for trusting us with their work, and incredibly excited to share it with the public.”

As part of the announcement, ACMI released a sprite sheet from Silksong—one of several development assets that will be on display. The image, shared with IGN under permission, offers a glimpse into the meticulous animation work behind the game.

With the game set to be playable in September, speculation is growing about its official launch date. Many assume a release will precede the museum debut, potentially pointing to an August 2025 launch window.

This news follows Silksong’s brief appearance in Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct last month—a fleeting but significant update that included a few seconds of new gameplay and reaffirmed the 2025 release plan. It marked the most substantial glimpse into the game in years.

Initially announced for Nintendo Switch and PC, Silksong has since expanded to include Xbox (and Game Pass) and PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions. Over the years, Team Cherry has fueled anticipation with cryptic teases, including a puzzling 2025 announcement tied to a chocolate cake recipe, sparking fan theories of an April re-reveal—though nothing materialized.

Still, with museum playability confirmed and momentum building, the wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong may finally be drawing to a close.
